Jeremy Fascaldo As an experienced cartoonist and a cartoonist trying to learn more about the industry, the publishers I was familiar with growing up were Scholastic Graphix publications via Jeff Smith’s Bone. On Thursday, I attended the “Graphics: 20 Years of Children’s Comics” panel discussion at New York Comic Con in a sort of full-circle moment. The panel discussion was moderated by Publishers Weekly editor Meg Lemke and featured creators Samuel Sattin (Unico: Awakening, Unico: Hunted), Laura Terry (Adorable Empire), Cassandra Kalin (The New Girl), Cristina Diaz Gonzalez (Invisible), and Mol Melos (Snowlands). Peacemaker concluded its second (and possibly final…?) season last night, featuring the DC Universe’s first appearance of Checkmate, the spy-cum-superhero organization from the comics. Checkmate co-creator Paul Kupperberg is apparently a fan of Peacemaker. Because he reacted in near real time on Facebook, sharing a screenshot from the show with the caption, “Wait! What?!” In this episode, Checkmate is introduced as a group founded by the 11th Street Kids, a team of ARGUS expatriates and superheroes Peacemakers. This reveal occurred near the end of the episode, and while many friends and fans commented that they had foreseen it coming, Kupperberg…

Image credit: Image Comics Inspired by the one-shot special, which tells the story over 55 cards, I thought it might be a belated time to check out W. Maxwell Prince’s popular comic. Here, the slightly creepy tone turns into full-blown horror, and we learn why Byron was alone in the neighborhood. Across town, a woman had reported a frightening incident involving her cat to the police. Eventually, the cop stumbles upon Byron’s horrifying secret and gets…
