Dev Lynea immigrates to Japan with his father and quickly becomes embroiled in the city’s vibrant and dangerous underground street racing scene. However, there is something lurking that no one can foresee. It’s a monster.
From an artistic perspective, this first issue of M1: Monster Racing League feels like Jae Lee, with all the obstacles removed and the nitrous boost turned on. There’s a truly great sense of style throughout, with beautifully designed characters, gorgeous environments, and incredibly original panel layouts. It’s just a visual delight.
That said, the story itself is very similar to Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift in many ways, and the monsters themselves have no part in this at all. It feels a little disappointing. There’s some good work with the cast of teenage characters, and the racing sequences work well, but I can’t help but feel like there’s a bit of a throttling going on here in terms of pacing.
That being said, art actually conveys experience. I hope that the story will start moving in earnest from the next issue.
Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.
