Image credit: Jason Brown, midlifegamergeek.com It took me a really long time to get around to reading the first volume of Plants vs. Zombies, Dark Horse’s comic adaptation of the popular video game series. The game was released in 2011, and while it was still a few years after the first game was released, it’s notable that it only features elements from the first game, as subsequent sequels and spin-offs (such as the Garden Warfare series) had yet to be released. Is that a good thing? Let’s find out. Nate Timely doesn’t seem to have much brilliance. Case in point:…

On Saturday, October 11th, Kodansha’s “Seeing Yourself: Queer Representation in Manga” panel began at 4:15 and was moderated by Ivan Salazar of Kodansha Sales and Marketing. The panel discussion included TJ Ferentini (senior editor at Kodansha), Gigi Murakami (creator of the VIZ original one-shot Resenter), and Morgan Perry (marketing manager at Square Enix). Perry was delayed in traffic on her way home from Kodansha House in SoHo, so the panel discussion began without her. The panel discussion began with words from sponsor Kodansha, who introduced several new releases and Kodansha House, a pop-up event space and manga library. Salazar then…
Cullen Bunn is one of the most prolific and consistent purveyors of horror comics in the industry today. For someone with such a large body of work, it’s amazing that his work is never less than good, often reaching greatness, and offering readers a wide variety of horrors. From Brian Hart’s bizarre westerns to Andrea Mutti’s serial killers, Sally Cantilino’s humorous monster hunts, Danny Ruckert’s tricky past-life cults, and the list goes on. Tyler Crook burst onto the scene with an original graphic novel with Philip Gerratt that delved into the conspiracy surrounding Rasputin’s death, and quickly made a name…

Like the previously released installments of their horror series, Dracula: Book III—The Count takes place in the shadows of the original novel and tells the familiar and horrifying tale from the vampire’s own point of view. The book has already exceeded its crowdfunding goal of $666, having garnered…
New York Comic Con was a good event for Patrick Horvath. The author and artist of Free For All and Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees has won a Harvey Award, announced his third installment in the Beneath the Trees series, and is set to score a tie-breaking goal at DC KO. This was something that no one expected. By Saturday afternoon, it was all in the rearview mirror and Horvath had time to “relax” by signing autographs for fans and talking to reporters at the IDW booth. He joined The Beat for a conversation about Beneath the Tree: The…

Dead Sky Publishing has built a formidable book series with a reputation for not being afraid to test readers’ limits. From the perverted body horror Dead Inside (with one of the most shocking opening sentences in recent memory) to the steampunk dinosaur comic Red Range, the publisher is keen to differentiate itself. Dead Sky is currently at New York Comic Con at booth #2140, with a large selection of books on display. The publisher’s products clearly depict how important the publisher’s presence has become in the field of comics and prose, especially genre fiction. The publisher focuses on developing western…
