In this seventh issue, new artist Hernan Gonzalez brings an entirely new, more realistic aesthetic to Star Trek: The Last Starship.

All hope seems lost for Sato, Kirk, and their remaining crew as Starfleet loses hundreds of worlds to the Emerald Chain, but an intercepted message may hold the key to the survival of the universe.

There’s nothing wrong with exploring dark themes in the normally optimistic Star Trek universe, but The Last Starship seems hell-bent on making everything as dark and gloomy as possible. To be honest, it’s a little tiring. Even the colorful, retro aesthetic of previous issues loses out here to a heavy, dark look.

I’m not really interested in large portions of the instructions continuing to be delivered in text format. It feels like a lazy storytelling device for the comics medium.

I also have no interest in Captain Kirk continuing to exist. Captain Kirk has very little to do and is not involved in the plot at all. This has long felt like a Star Trek 60th Anniversary contraption, and nothing that happens here will deter me from that perspective.

At points in this issue, it even feels more like Event Horizon than Star Trek. Again, I don’t particularly have a problem with Trek exploring different themes and genres, but Cosmic Horror just didn’t work for me.

If IDW hadn’t released all the content they publish on GlobalComix Gold on the first day, I would have dropped this series a few issues back and I wouldn’t have missed it.

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.

Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Please support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will not only help me keep the lights on here, but will also help keep my writing dreams alive. However, please understand that there is no pressure. I hope you enjoy reading my article.
