Hikaru Sulu’s first mission as captain of the USS Excelsior is chronicled here in a story where he and his crew team up with Kirk and Enterprise. Sulu must take the lead in a mission to destroy an old weapons stockpile, but an incident occurs that causes the two spaceships to go their separate ways and deal with the situation separately.
This comic has a really old-school, Trek-like feel to it (I bought it at Southampton Comics). It goes beyond the Starfleet uniforms of the 80s and early 90s. The dialogue perfectly captures each character’s voice, and everyone acts and reacts according to the situation as it unfolds as expected. It’s interesting to see Kirk be a little unsure of himself as he deals with his former crewmate, who is now the captain, and it’s great to see Sulu in control.
Another aspect I liked was the fact that, rather than artificial practical effects, the alien races were able to become more bizarre and evolve far beyond the normal humanoids seen on Trek, thanks to the limitations removed from working on the comic book page. The art also does a great job of depicting familiar characters without them feeling too out of place, like photo references, which is an all-too-common problem in modern times.
This is a great start to this six part series and I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the story.
