Following The Phantom vs The Sky Band #1, we have the second “The Phantom vs” one-shot, The Phantom vs The Red Dragons.
In this comic, someone brutally murders members of the Red Dragon Gang. Phantom is being blamed, but that’s not his doing, nor is it his MO. So who is behind these murders and why?
This shot felt a little disappointing, especially after the fun and daring adventures of Phantom vs. Sky Band. It feels a little disjointed and unsatisfying, and worse, it leads to a “conclusion” that only sets up the next one-shot, Phantom vs. the Brotherhood of Shin, leaving this feeling incomplete. The title is also misleading. It’s not actually the Phantom against the Red Dragons at all, but the Phantom is trying to figure out who is targeting him and why, when the Red Dragons aren’t even a target.
Still, there’s some decent action, artwork by Lynne Yoshii, and some good moments as well, if not consistently strong throughout.
I enjoy Mad Cave’s Phantom comics, but in my opinion this is the weakest of the comics so far.
