Petey is tired of living in a boring small town. Rather than yearning for the mines, he wants to escape the mines and find a rewarding job. Heading into the big city, it’s not long before Petey is dealing with workplace accidents, urban chaos, and more danger than he can wield a dagger. Meanwhile, while a group of adventurers takes on a seemingly insignificant task, a sinister force is rising behind the scenes.
This first issue of the indie comic Forged proved to be very appealing, with a witty, dialogue-heavy script (courtesy of Michael Eckett) and beautiful, cartoonish, distinctive artwork by Ryan Jenkins (aided by beautiful, bold color work by David B. Cooper, Jose Exposito, and CF Lam).
There’s a lot of exposition and character building going on here, but the scenes featuring the film’s villain feel a little forced and somewhat interrupt the flow of getting to know our hero without doing much to clarify his motivations.
Of course, since you need to start multiple threads for a single problem, it’s almost inevitable that something will get lost in the mix. In fairness, the fact that we spent more time getting to know Petey, who is lovably clumsy rather than a nefarious villain, is probably for the best. I hope the other side of the story becomes a little more fleshed out as the series progresses.
But overall, this is a really fun, bright, and humorous read. Perfect for comics and fantasy fans of all ages, Forged #1 is a promising start to the series, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how Petey’s adventures in the big city unfold.
