When issue #15 of the current Flash Gordon series (published by Mad Cave Studios) ended, I had no idea where they could take this story next. After all, when it came to Flash Gordon, there were 15 issues covering all the major bases. An interesting current situation after the evil Ming the Merciless’ home planet was destroyed allowed for some great character twists, and the addition of parallel universe elements added further spice to the proceedings.

Issue #15 felt like all the threads had been closed and a proper conclusion had been reached, so issue #0 handed the reins to writer Dan Abnett, fueling his desire for issue #16 and the start of a new day for Flash Gordon and his friends.

In issue #0, The Flash trains a new generation of astronauts and takes them on an unauthorized and highly unconventional field trip. The first issue begins with the Flash landing on Earth and being handed off on a mission to stop a giant celestial object from colliding with Earth. But the old friends are in the shadows, and it doesn’t seem to be long until the Flash defies authority and becomes a star again.

There’s a lot of explanation to understand in order to move all the pieces into place and get the Flash back into space. That being said, this is a very interesting and intriguing new direction for the series, although it does seem a bit more sombre and serious compared to what came before, and certainly not what readers would expect from a Flash Gordon comic.

Still, Manuel Garcia’s art is stunning with genuine realism, enhanced by Ceci de la Cruz’s grounded color scheme.

When things finally start moving in terms of action, there’s a nice callback to the 1980 Flash Gordon movie and some nice, cosmic colors to liven things up a bit.

Having enjoyed the first story arc so much, I’m definitely fully invested in this incarnation of Flash Gordon and looking forward to continuing to see where his exploits take him and his friends next. Not the most exciting start, but I’m definitely intrigued by Abnett’s new setup.

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.

Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Please support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will not only help me keep the lights on here, but will also help keep my writing dreams alive. However, please understand that there is no pressure. I hope you enjoy reading my article.
