There was me, thinking I had the first part of a new crossover. Admittedly, DC X Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion #1 is the first issue of this series, but it continues to reference previous Sonic crossovers in which the video game cast encountered the DC Universe for the first time.
You’re not really missing anything important. This issue features scene after scene in which the Sonic character teams up with a DC hero (or villain!). But the foundations are being laid here for a much bigger threat, with the crossover really taking off. However, the issue feels rather disjointed and expository, at least until the final scene. Despite continuing to return to previous series, this #1 issue feels as if the characters are determined to re-establish the connection between the two worlds once again, along with the fact that they already know each other.
There are some neat team-ups, though, such as Shadow arguing with Robin after Batman calls him on cue, and Silver pointing out that Green Lantern probably doesn’t need to put up with Guy Gardner, given how many people are already in the Corps.
This is fun enough on its own, and if you’re a big fan of both series, you don’t need me to tell you it’s more than that. For fans of video games and comics, it’s thrilling to see these two very different worlds collide and work together. With less exposition-heavy follow-up issues, I’m confident that DC X Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion will become even more enjoyable as it progresses.
