Titan Comics continues its spiritual successor to classic Marvel magazines with this second volume of The Savage Sword of Conan.
To be honest, I was really excited about the possibilities at first, given that the first story in this volume is a crossover of sorts, featuring Robert E. Howard’s characters, including Conan. But they’re mostly disappointing, way too short and almost feel like an advertisement for a “real” crossover (Battle of the Black Stone) that takes place in the mainline Conan comic series.
More than making up for that, Jason Aaron’s multi-part King Conan epic is a deeply satisfying and gory adventure with some gloriously dastardly villains and more violence than a particularly bloody sword-wielding.
There are other short stories here as well, including prose stories and other Howard character strips (thankfully unrelated to the underwhelming and half-baked Blackstone work). Even if the story isn’t enough, the art from carefully selected creators is always impressive.
To reiterate my problem with Volume 1, my biggest problem is that each issue’s gorgeous painted cover is presented in black and white in these collections. This is understandable, but unfortunate.
Despite this, and despite the disappointment with the crossover setting, this volume is chock-full of great, gritty, and mature content. Aaron’s story more than makes up for any initial disappointment, and The Savage Sword of Conan remains one of the best value comics monthly issues to date. The Collected Edition is also competitively priced compared to other comic book collections, which is a definite bonus.
