Redcoat’s first story arc comes to a sad end this week. The first issue was swinging with great action sequences and an eye-catching pace. Now it’s time to say goodbye to an old friend. This is something an immortal must do many times. Redcoat #7 is a story about saying goodbye and starting next.
This issue serves as an epilogue to the first story arc, and is very transitional as Simon Pure moves on from his first epic journey. The story begins with Simon looking depressed in bed, with multiple used plates among many empty wine bottles on the floor. On the second page, we see a ceiling fan that looks far too modern considering most of this story takes place in 1892. Set up in his normal attire, we can immediately tell through the cars and clothing that we are in the 1950s.
The central focus of this issue is Simon saying goodbye to Albert Einstein. He is on his deathbed and Simon is not happy about the situation. It’s easy to see that these two have a close bond, considering he was just a child the last time we saw him and the adventures they went on. It’s time for Simon to say goodbye to another close friend.
Does that ceiling fan look like something from the 1800s?

This issue acts as a transition from what Simon was when he was with Albert to something more. Artist Brian Hitch captures Simon’s solemn nature and seriousness well. Albert had nothing to lose or care about before, but towards the end he is losing something. It’s unclear where Simon goes from here by the end of this issue, but it’s hard to deny that he’s changed after issue seven.
This issue is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s fascinating to watch the time leap and not know how Simon would live in the modern world, which is much closer to ours. Meanwhile, writers Geoff Johns and Hitch don’t give us much information about what Simon is doing now or where he’s going. Albert tells him a compelling truth about mortality, but if you want to know more about what happens from here, you’ll have to read the next issue in December.
However, if Simon takes to heart Albert’s words about becoming the best version of yourself after living a full life, then Simon has something to strive for as an imperfect human being.
Redcoat #7 is a quiet chapter where Simon says goodbye to his best friend Albert Einstein. In this farewell, the creators seem to be hinting that Simon will move on to a new life, ending this first story arc.

Quite a slow chapter, not much said about where it goes from here
