I read “Tavish”. “The Survivor” is the first story in the comic anthology “When We Burn #1,” and I’m completely sold on its vision of a medieval world infested with terrifying monsters. Some of them are humans, but most are ferocious, bloodthirsty creatures of various forms.
The title character, Tavish, survives by wandering the world in solitude. The story delves into his history and how he became the sole survivor, and also asks the question, “What happens when you find a reason to live instead of just surviving?”
Given the brevity of the story, and the necessity of its format, given that while we burn is an anthology that tells four different stories (albeit all set in the same world), it’s remarkable how much detail and world-building is given to that small number of pages.
The art is also amazing, with a great sense of detail and scale. Despite how much explanation is needed to introduce the dark and depraved fantasy world of this story, there is also plenty of gory action.
While We Burn #1, currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, is the brainchild of Denis Belasevic, who wrote all four stories in the anthology, each collaborating with a different artist.
Despite the fact that I’ve only had a taste of this comic through the first story, I’m incredibly hooked and fully on board to further explore Belasevic’s deadly and cruel world.
You can pledge to buy a copy of While We Burn #1 on Kickstarter right now. Various formats are available.
Thanks to Denis Berashevich for sending me a digital copy of the first story in the anthology for review purposes.
Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.
Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.
Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
