José Villarrubia is dissatisfied with Tyler Carcam’s cover

Colorist Jose Vilalvia went to social media today to call out the Clover Press using a plagiarized Tyler Carcam cover. Villarrubia wrote on Facebook that Clover Press used “Kirkham and De La Cruz used the classic Romita Jr. and Sr. Cover I Colored to promote his artbook.”

On June 4, 2025, Clover Press posted a Spider-Man image to promote the Kickstarter campaign for Killcam’s new art book, Tyler Kicam’s Marvel Art. The project is already funded.

On June 25th, 2025, Villarrubia posted and had problems with Kirkham’s cover.

“…Let’s talk about the difference between respect and plagiarism.

The image in the center is a great example of homage. As mentioned before, John Romita Jr. revisited his previous cover. The original was painted penciled by him, engraved by his father, John Romita Sr., and colored me (left). For his amazing Spider-Man #43 cover (center), the new version was inked by Scott Hanna and colored by Dan Kemp. Each of them did not attempt to mimic what had been done before. It’s clearly inspired by the original, but adds something new. It is not a trace, it is not a copy. It’s respectful and creative. You can’t mistakenly get both images in pencil, ink or colored.

Next, look at the far right. The Tyler Kirkham variant cover of Amazing Spider-Man #26, colored by Ceci de la Cruz, is not a homage. It’s a rip. ”

Amazing Spider-Man #43 inked by Scott Hanna and colored by Dan Kemp. Release Date: July 24, 2002 The Amazing Spider-Man #26 Spectrum Comic Tyler Carcam Variant was released on May 31, 2023

And here, 50% is overlaid with the original.

In the post, some people said this is a homage banner. Still, Villarrubia responded quickly by posting a Clover Press Advertisement.

“Just because you trust something doesn’t mean it’s not plagiarized. Calling something an “homage” isn’t enough. Either way, tomatoes, tomafu, rifted or plagiarized. ”

Kilmham hasn’t weighed the situation yet, but if development occurs, you can rest assured and keep your readers on a loop and beat with the latest updates.
