Image credit: Jason Brown, midlifegamergeek.com It’s hard to believe now that this very comic was the launching pad for the commercial launch of Image Comics, which remains the third largest comic book publisher in the United States today. The impetus for the creation of this publishing company was a group of young artists who were dissatisfied with their positions at Marvel. Their flashy, edgy art brought in tons of fans to comic book stores (not to mention several re-releases and gimmicks that brought in collectors and speculators), resulting in unprecedented sales for some famous Marvel comics. But they stood up…
Redcoat, a Ghost Machine/Image Comics title by Geoff Johns and Brian Hitch, is in development as a feature film through Atlas Entertainment, one of the production companies behind Wonder Woman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Longtime DC producer Charles Roven will produce the film for Atlas, with Johns on board to write the script based on Johns and Hitch’s story. All of Ghost Machine’s employees have some ownership in the intellectual property, suggesting that Brad Anderson, Andrew Curry, and Rob Lee are likely involved in the game. “Every great series is built on great characters, and Simon Pure on Redcoat…
Australian cartoonist Tomi Parrish released his latest graphic novel with publisher Fantagraphics earlier this month. This graphic novel is a collection of more than a dozen short stories, diary entries, photographs, and other multimedia images presented as something like a hybrid of a scrapbook and a comic anthology. Today, The Beat published an exclusive preview of a book titled The Past Is a Grotesque Animal. Here’s the full synopsis: Extensive collection/scrapbook of over 20 short stories, diaries, photos, and other images. Driven by trends in understanding how we relate to each other, it is told with visual and lyrical beauty…
Whether you’re a fan of the original comics or the 1991 movie, there’s no denying the impact the Rocketeer character has had on pop culture. Since the death of creator Dave Stevens in 2008, Rocketeer has lived on for many years in comics written and drawn by other creators. Today, IDW Publishing announced details for The Rocketeer: The Island, a limited series set to launch this February from the creative team of John Layman (Titans, Chew), hit artist Jacob Edgar (Plastic Man No More!, Batman: The Adventures Continue), and visionary colorist KJ Diaz (The Amazing Spider-Man, Blade). Additionally, the series…
Written by RM Rose The latest news from Heavy Metal is that they will be launching a Kickstarter on November 18, 2025. Now, those of you with a decent memory may remember that the last Kickstarter associated with the magazine’s triumphant return ended at the end of 2024. Don’t worry, this is completely different. One of the challenges that new heavy metal has yet to overcome is its tendency to flood the communication zone with hype but not really touch on the finer points of the original announcement. As a result, you may have to go back and answer questions…

Embattled Angoulême International Comics Festival owner Association FIBD and controversial operator 9e Art+ made dramatic concessions on Thursday, including the immediate “retirement” of reviled operator boss Franck Bondoux. An emergency meeting between authors, publishers, financial partners and mayor Xavier Bonnefont took place. Their answer: not good enough. Franck Bondoux has become an increasingly reviled figure in French comics. As the Angoulême Festival’s self-appointed General Delegate since 2004, he leads his company 9e Art+ (formed 2008) in putting each annual edition together on behalf of Association FIBD. He also arranges private sponsorships for the festival with his other company, Partnership Consulting.…
ICE has become one of the defining issues of the Trump administration’s vision for America. That militarization is creating new problems. That is, as cities and towns with large immigrant populations turn into war zones, masked men with guns locking communities behind doors, fearing that their dreams and attempts at a safe and stable existence will come to an abrupt end. But people around the world are taking up the task of resisting deportation authorities’ operations through protests, education, and community cooperation. Spreading the good word about how to protect yourself from the violent acts so thoroughly documented by these…
