Will Grant Morrison return to the comics world with a big bowl of ice cream?

Image Comics has been practicing the art of teasers lately, and yesterday they released a pretty sweet teaser that hints at Grant Morrison’s return to the comics world.

Morrison has been basking in his comic book glory since returning to writing after wrapping up his Green Lantern serial in 2021. After all, as the now 64-year-old MBE told me in 2016, “I don’t have anything left. The truth is, I don’t have any dream projects right now.” They’ve also been entertaining people with stories from the Substack vaults for a while now.

But as the teaser suggests, there may be one thing that Morrison will be tempted by: ice cream. After all, they’re human, and we all love ice cream.

Conventional wisdom and a detailed analysis of the lettering font used in the teaser lead us to speculate that Morrison will team up with the anthology series ICE CREAM MAN, written by W. Maxwell Prince and illustrated by Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran. The title has garnered cult popularity for its Twilight Zone-like stories of “sorrow, surprise, and redemption.” It’s a format that comics have always excelled in, and Hollywood has taken notice. At one point, the series was optioned by the disastrous short-form video platform Quibi, but thankfully that option lapsed. However, just a few days ago, it was reported that the comic is once again in development, but as a film, with “Beetlejuice” and “Beetlejuice” screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar set to adapt it for Sony’s Screen Gems label.

When you think of Grant Morrison, the master of sadness, surprise and relief, and now a screenwriter, teaming up with a highly imaginative comic book capable of infusing so much emotion… well, you’re in for a treat!

But there could be another interpretation. Perhaps… Grant Morrison just loves ice cream. What flavor would they go for? Rocky Road? Activated charcoal? Or, as we’ve chosen, delicious flavors like Badam Carnival and Chikoo from Indian sweets company Vadilal. They’re all delicious.

All kidding aside, Morrison is one of the great comics writers, so their return, even for a short while, is about as exciting as a big bowl of ice cream.
