Marvel Comics has announced that a new X-Men series, Magic, will debut on January 8. Written by Ashley Allen and illustrated by Germán Peralta, the series will be the character’s first solo serialization.
“I’m so excited to return to writing Illyana!” said Allen. “Supernatural stories with kind-hearted characters are my favorite, so writing this series has been a dream come true! I can’t wait for readers to join Magik on her demon-slaying adventures — and embrace her own demons.”
So, what is Magik?
The mysterious mutant goes on a demon hunt in her own series! X-Man Illyana Rasputina strikes out on her own, with new allies and dark forces standing against her. Something ancient has awakened beneath the ice of Alaska. Unfortunately, it’s Magic territory!
Throughout the series, Magik is forced to confront her tragic past and learn to control her demonic dark child personality. After years of suppression, Illyana’s dark child form returns from the depths of her tortured soul, granting her even more strength and power, but at what cost?
“I’m super excited about this project,” Peralta said. “Magic is a character with an incredible backstory, shrouded in darkness and mystery. Plus, she’s visually stunning in all her versions, and I personally love Chris Bachalo’s designs. I really love illustrating action scenes and emotional scenes, and Ashley Allen has written a really interesting script that balances those two types of situations, making my job even more fun. I mean, what artist wouldn’t love to draw Magik with a great sword going up against all kinds of demons?”
