The first issue of the relaunched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles serialized series kicks off a new status quo with Raphael in prison, telling a darkly fascinating tale of the most hot-headed of the prison Turtles.
The focus of this second issue is Michelangelo, but his current situation is exactly the same as Raphael’s. Mikey is the star of a kind of special effects show, but instead of a costumed superhero protagonist, he’s a living special effect at the center of the action. He’s a big star, but there’s a void in Mikey’s life, and despite his fame, he realizes he’s not entirely safe.
The first issue was a huge success, with Jason Aaron’s excellent script perfectly matched by Rafael Albuquerque’s detailed, realistic, yet dynamic art. I had some concerns about Rafael’s body type (his prison uniform somehow managed to fit under his carapace), but that was a minor issue and everything else was superbly done. Issue two has none of those concerns, delivering a ferociously paced and eventful story that really captures Mikey’s current state of mind.
It’s a fantastic piece of work, and shows just how powerful and flexible the TMNT concept is (though of course, it’s no surprise to longtime Turtles fans).
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the publication of the first TMNT comic, and while the Turtles’ popularity has certainly waned since their heyday in the late ’80s and early ’90s, in terms of overall quality the series stands stronger than it’s ever been, and the second issue of this new TMNT series brilliantly confirms that notion.
