In celebration of the upcoming release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, Marvel is promoting the artwork of one of Capcom’s legendary artists, Bengus, on a variety of covers for the comic line. Featuring iconic character illustrations from Bengus’ tenure at MARVEL vs. Capcom, the covers are intended as character homages to the original concept art style and designs of the artist, who has had a major impact on the world of art and gaming.

While many fans may be too young to remember, the MARVEL vs. CAPCOM series of games was incredibly revolutionary in the history of the superhero video game genre. The fighting game borrowed heavily from both X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Superheroes, marking one of the first ever generational upgrades in terms of gameplay and popularizing the tag-team battle mechanic in the game itself.

Moreover, the game series became very popular not only in international internet cafes but also in modern arcades in the 90s and early 2000s. This historic game contributed greatly to the evolution of gaming as we know it, thanks to Bengus’ early character design. The popularity of tag-team and button-mashing effectively ended 2D arcade action games and ushered in a new era of video game fighting genres. It was a time when cross-IP platforms felt fresh to gamers, and the strategy was so popular that it was used in legendary games soon after…

It’s called Super Smash Bros.

The genre-defining game series has been entertaining fans for over 25 years. Known for its innovative game mechanics and memorable music, this epic Marvel and Capcom crossover is also beloved for the iconic art style of designer Bengus, whose timeless depictions of Marvel characters now grace the current comic book titles they star in or feature in.
