Apple iPhone 16 Pro vs. the competition: Bigger and more buttons

Apple unveiled four new iPhones on Monday: the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. As expected, the updates are mostly iterative: The standard models adopt the programmable action buttons from last year’s Pro line, slightly improved battery life, and updated camera modules that are stacked vertically instead of at an angle.

Meanwhile, the Pro phones feature larger displays with slimmer bezels, improved battery life, and some camera upgrades, including 5x optical zoom and a sharper ultra-wide camera for the smaller Pro. The standard models run on Apple’s new A18 silicon, while the Pro models use a chip called the A18 Pro, which is faster and more efficient, as the name suggests.

The most notable change across the board in terms of hardware is likely the new touch-sensitive “camera control” buttons that bring photo and video capture a little closer to a DSLR, but these phones don’t look like a huge departure from the previous iPhone 15s. Much of Apple’s selling point will be about how useful its “Apple Intelligence” AI tools actually are.

We’ve already published a hands-on preview of the iPhone 16 Pro, and we’ll have a full review of the entire iPhone 16 lineup in the near future. But if you’re thinking about pre-ordering now, here’s a detailed specs sheet comparing the new iPhone 16 Pro to its two biggest rivals in the $1,000 price range: the Google Pixel 9 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S24+. As always, raw specs don’t tell the whole story. Maybe you buy an iPhone because you want iOS, and you buy an Android phone because you prefer Android. But if you’re wondering what you’re getting for a $1,000 phone in 2024, here’s what Apple’s latest device has to offer.
