At the “It’s Glowtime iPhone 16” launch event on Monday, Apple unveiled the new generation AirPods 4. Last year, when Apple equipped the iPhone 15 with a USB-C connector, it also equipped the second-generation AirPods Pro charging case with a USB-C connector. Apple is sticking with this version for now, but the high-end earphones are expected to get a ton of new hearing features in a software update this fall. The AirPods Max also received some updates, but the AirPods 4 was the only all-new audio device.
When it comes to the new earbuds, perhaps the most notable feature is the addition of optional active noise cancellation. They’ll cost $129 without noise cancellation and $179 with noise cancellation. They’re available for preorder now, with the pair expected to hit stores on September 20th. Here’s how to preorder:

The new mid-range Apple AirPods 4 come equipped with a new H2 chip and now support active noise cancellation and transparency mode, just like the more expensive AirPods Pro. However, this feature is only available on the more expensive version of the earbuds, which cost $179 with ANC and $129 without. If you buy the more expensive earbuds, you can also get them to automatically switch modes depending on the environment and lower the volume when you start talking.
Other features include a new charging case that supports wireless charging or a wired USB-C connection, and the case also has a speaker to help you find it under the bed or in the driver’s seat using the Find My app.
The AirPods 4 will cost $129 without active noise cancellation and $179 with active noise cancellation. You can preorder them now, and they’ll be in stores and start shipping on September 20th.
