If the many books and movies in the Twilight universe haven’t given you enough material to work with, there’s a new TV project in the works that will either make you love or hate the glittering vampires of the Pacific Northwest. An animated series adaptation of Midnight Sun is currently in development at Netflix. Published in 2020, Midnight Sun is a companion piece to the original Twilight novels, telling the same events as those books from Edward Cullen’s perspective. That’s right, it tells your side of the story of a pathological, masochistic lion who falls in love with a dumb lamb known as Bella Swan.
Netflix’s announcement didn’t reveal much about the show beyond its existence and producing team. Writer Stephenie Meyer will serve as executive producer on the series, as she has with most other Twilight projects. The only other notable behind-the-scenes news is that Sinead Daly will serve as writer and executive producer on the series. Daly’s past writing credits include Tell Me Lies, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Get Down.
Since the success of an animated show depends on its art team, I’m curious to see which studio will be brave enough to recreate the classic image of Robert Pattinson nearly throwing up his lunch upon first exposure to Kristen Stewart and her intoxicating blood. Additional details about the cast and release date will likely be revealed as the show gets closer to its premiere.
Netflix is dedicating significant resources to producing animated programming, with the streaming service picking up several series inspired by video game franchises, including Arcane, Tomb Raider, and Minecraft.
