DTS has built an AI-powered system to improve dialogue clarity

One of the most universal annoyances in life is when the TV explosions and soundtracks are always so loud, yet the conversations are quieter than a church mouse. This is especially true of modern action movies and TV shows that seem to be mixed in a wall-shaking way, leaving them nearly indistinguishable.

So you get to the settings. Adjust the position of your soundbar. Turn on subtitles. You do it all. These methods help a little, but they’re not enough. Now DTS is looking to solve this problem once and for all with some well-placed AI. The company has announced its DTS Clear Dialogue feature, an “AI-powered solution designed to enhance dialogue clarity on your TV.”

DTS says its AI algorithms identify and highlight dialogue in the audio stream, eliminating the aforementioned issues. The system also lets you personalize your audio settings; one person’s “perfect” may be another’s “no thanks.”

It’s an on-device toolset that will eventually be adopted by TV manufacturers. DTS hasn’t announced any partnerships yet, but its technology is used by major manufacturers such as Sony, Hisense, Philips, LG, and Vizio. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for the first TVs to incorporate this feature. For now, the company is demoing the service at its upcoming IFA tech conference in Berlin.

DTS partners with content providers to bring theater-quality audio to the home — the company recently partnered with Disney to enhance the sound of MCU movies to deliver an IMAX-like experience — so here’s hoping the MCU movies get some of that AI-enhanced dialogue magic it promises.
