Mix in elements of sci-fi, conspiracy theories, and giant mechs, and you’ve got a treat for fans of Pacific Rim, Stranger Things, and Mobile Suit Gundam. Written by Chris Moses, illustrated by Andrea Giannini, colored by James Offready, and lettered by Reed Hinckley Barnes, Synap takes readers to the not-too-distant future of 2030. Not only that, Synap also makes an effort to feature a diverse cast, including mixed-race and non-binary characters.

Synap has two covers, Cover A is illustrated by Ivan Tao and Cover B by Stephen Byrne.

Synap brings Moses’ “love of UFOs, psychic powers and conspiracy theories” into an action-packed series. Moses praised Giannini’s interior work and also thanked Mad Cave for their support in publishing the series.

Giannini said the comic focuses on “the characters’ relationships and inner growth. Chris and I tried to bring the characters to life as best we could, based on their roles in the project. I think we succeeded. Every reader will be able to identify with some of the characters, because even the supporting characters are full of depth and vitality, with multifaceted personalities and aesthetic sensibilities.”

Giannini said that in the process of creating the film, “I tried to create an aesthetic that evoked all of the fantasy genres that Chris was inspired by when writing the story.” Giannini thanked the Mad Cave team for supporting his Synap debut, as well as James B. Emmett, who “believed in me and stuck with me throughout the creation of the film.”

An overview of Synap is as follows:

In the year 2030, Synap, a family-run private defense company, secretly assembles parts for a mysterious giant robot and trains psychic talent to one day pilot it. But when there’s an alarming increase in UFO sightings, the family finds themselves running out of time to build the ancient machine.
