On Tuesday, Rebellion launched its first-ever Kickstarter campaign for Roxy, a romance anthology that evokes classic British romance comics while updating them for the 21st century. The book features four stories, one of which, “What I Was Made For” by Nadia Shamus and Joes Stone, is available for an exclusive preview by The Beat today.
The original Roxy was a British girls’ romance comic published weekly by Amalgamated Press and Fleetway Publications from 1958 to 1963, totaling 288 issues. This latest anthology includes the main cover by Hannah Templer, a retro Roxy paperback edition, and a hardcover edition by Marguerite Sauvage and Toula Lotay, available as campaign perks for backers. It’s also worth noting that all creators of this project have already been paid. Rebellion is looking to use Kickstarter as a marketplace to expand their readership.
Roxy’s four stories are:
In Getaway Girls by Alex de Campi and Erica Henderson, aspiring model Melanie heads to Paris hoping to make it big in the fashion capital. But when she catches sight of superstar model Hattie, a world-famous Getaway Girls, admiration turns to lust and their relationship goes from friendly to flirting. Melanie’s world changes overnight, but what secret is Hattie hiding? Will Melanie find out in time?
Flowers for Agatha is a supernatural tale of lost love by Sarah Gordon. Nearly ten years have passed since Agatha, a witch, said goodbye to the love of her life who went into the woods and never returned. Walking through those same woods, she comes face to face with the man she lost. What tragedy happened to him there, and can there be a happier ending this time?
“Banmore” by Magdalene Visaggio and Stehlick is a time-travel tale that pays homage to Regency-era romance. After her father dies, Becky is shocked to discover that his will left her the keys to a huge country house deep in the English countryside.
Flying from the US to her new home, she discovers a secret chamber that allows her to travel back in time, where she meets the man of her dreams – or at least, that’s what she thinks…
“What I Was Made For” by Nadia Shamus and Joe Stone is a story of love, loneliness and friendship. It finds Alyx on her first day on duty aboard a spaceship in the far future. Forming a symbiotic relationship with the mech she operates while on duty, Alyx soon realizes their relationship runs deeper than she expected. Are they getting too close?
The Beat is proud to present the first four pages of “What I Was Made For” by Shammas and Stone. Check out the preview below.
Roxy is available now on Kickstarter, with the campaign running until Thursday, August 8th at 3pm EST. Backer rewards include digital and physical copies of the anthology, as well as a collector’s bundle with exclusive merch.
