Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere RPG has raised a whopping $11 million on crowdfunding website Kickstarter, making it the platform’s highest-funded tabletop RPG. Based on the fantasy author’s Cosmere setting (a world shared by many of his works), the game smashed through its initial $250,000 goal, setting a new record for a Kickstarter RPG in the final days of the campaign.
Originally heralded as the Stormlight RPG, creator Brotherwise Games later revealed that the Stormlight content was only the first section of a larger tabletop RPG intended to encompass the entire world of Cosmere. Shortly after announcing this surprise, on August 6th, 202, a Kickstarter campaign was launched to great success.
Three Stormlight books will be released for Cosmere RPG in 2025 (a world guide, a handbook, and an adventure from Sandersen and VP of narrative Dan Wells), followed by Mistborn content in 2026. Elantris material is also planned to be released. The Kickstarter page says the game will be “a living RPG that grows as Brandon Sanderson expands the universe of the Cosmere novels.” The idea is that you can play in any of the individual settings, or as a world hopper who travels between them.
With $11 million in funding, Cosmere has become the highest grossing tabletop RPG on Kickstarter, surpassing the previous title holder, Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game. Created by Magpie Games, this Powered By the Apocalypse game raised $9.5 million on Kickstarter. Releasing in 2022, it continues to add new content (there is an ongoing guide to the adventures of Uncle Iroh).
Cosmere RPG’s impressive total makes the game the third best performing tabletop title released so far on the platform, behind only the board games Kingdom Death Monster (1.5) and Frosthaven. With just two days left in the crowdfunding campaign, it will be interesting to see if the game can surpass those games.
