Glacier Bay Books, a small North American manga publisher, has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to release a reprint of Imai Arata’s acclaimed alternative/underground manga “F,” as well as English versions of two new books, Imai Arata’s “Flash Point” and Andrew White’s “Spring Tides.” Following the success of their previous campaign, which announced eight new books, Glacier Bay Books has reached over 50% of their crowdfunding goal of $27,000 in the first week. You can support the Kickstarter campaign by clicking here.

All three books are ready to print, and the campaign is designed to determine print runs and raise the funds needed for production. Each book will be produced using high-quality materials featuring sewn bindings, cream inner paper and black and white interiors, with Spring Tides being printed in a soft blue ink to enhance its dreamy atmosphere.

Let’s take a closer look at each manga:

“Flash Point” by Arata Imai

FLASH POINT is a stunning, award-winning contemporary political manga by Imai Arata that depicts viral conspiracy theories, social media lynchings, and the assassination of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo in 2022. Flash Point has been translated by award-winning translator and manga historian Ryan Holmberg and features an interview with the author.

F Arata Imai

F is another eerily compelling historical novel that depicts modern Japan in the shadow of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, imagining an invasion by radical foreign extremists following a wave of protests in the catastrophe’s aftermath. Imai’s English-language publishing debut and one of the highly acclaimed publications of 2021, with a then-limited release, has sparked interest, been recognized as a Notable/Best Book of the Year in multiple venues, and is creating buzz in cult/avant-garde manga circles for its shocking contemporary political commentary. F has been translated by award-winning translator and manga historian Ryan Holmberg and features an essay providing context for the work.

“Spring Tides” by Andrew White

SPRING TIDES marks poetic comics artist Andrew White’s Glacier Bay debut. Told through image, sound, sighs, and text, the two-part story paints the emotional landscape and physical turmoil of a young couple stranded after a flood submerges the earth, then slowly recedes, with no idea when it will return. As they try to understand what has happened to them and how to bounce back, SPRING TIDES weaves together themes of isolation and both personal and global breakdown, recalling the initial onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic and the moment society sought to reconfigure and rebuild itself shortly thereafter.

Once the Kickstarter campaign ends, Glacier Bay Books plans to send the books to press in early to mid-September 2024. The printing process will take about a month, followed by shipping to a US warehouse over a period of one to two months. Ideally, backers will start receiving their books in November 2024. European backers may receive their books earlier, as some of the titles will be sent directly from the printer to Naha Editora, Glacier Bay Book’s EU distribution partner in Portugal.

The Kickstarter will begin on August 20th and end on September 19th, 2024 at 9am PDT.
