Weddings, thieves, wizards, dragons and more all create trouble, and the sword-wielding devil must solve the mysteries in this one-shot comic.
You, like me, may be expecting this to be Sonya in a typical noir setting. Especially considering that at least one variant cover (obviously not mine, featuring Molly Stewart cosplaying the swordsman of the same name) is based on that idea. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, and the story isn’t particularly noir-like either.
Sure, Sonya has mysteries to dig into, and some good old-fashioned betrayal. However, other than that, there aren’t many noir elements, which is quite disappointing.
That said, if you adjust your expectations accordingly and approach it with the understanding that this is a one-off adventure for Red Sonja, it’s a very enjoyable problem. Everything was very fast paced, the mystery wrapped up nicely by the end, and perhaps the story could have had a little more room.
However, the film works as a solid fantasy actioner. What more could you ask for from Red Sonja?
