Ahead of a solo film that looks like it’s going to lean frighteningly deep into the body horror side of the character, Clayface is getting his own miniseries starting here with Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #1.
In this first issue, Clayface (a.k.a. actor Basil Carlo) is trapped in Arkham Tower and kept in an environment where he cannot escape from his containment chamber. No longer trusted, he looks for a way out, but realizes that he may not be the person he thinks he is…
Jude Ellison S. Doyle, who is known for writing horror comics, would be a great choice to write Clayface, especially since he seems to have a similar tone to the upcoming movie. I really liked that Clayface had a proper role as the main character here and that there were no other cameos to distract from the star of the show.
There are some shocking moments of physical horror in this opening issue, and Doyle’s script is actually served very well by Fran Galant’s gorgeously twisted art. Patricio Delpeche helps give the visuals a painterly look, and the overall aesthetic fits the material perfectly.
I was really impressed with this first issue. I can’t wait to see how Clayface does on the big screen. For now, the mystery and body horror of Celebrity Dirt will get me through.
