I went into this manga pretty blind. I mean, I obviously knew about Red Sonja, but I didn’t know that somewhere along the way, a demon with a sword had adopted her daughter.
Not only that, but the girl who was once possessed by a fire spirit is now free of her possession as an adult and retains the very cool ability to generate flames. Often apply them to her sword for awesome power-ups.
In this first issue of her solo series, Shysa has a rescue mission and doesn’t hesitate to use her abilities to make it a success. Despite successfully rescuing the target, something even bigger is on the horizon…
Red Sonja comics are known for their humor, although they aren’t necessarily as stoic and serious as many of the Conan stories (from which Sonja is based).
Sita’s comics, on the other hand, have a much lighter and more witty tone, and her character seems to have a lot of fun taking down the bad guys (and…other things).
Sita isn’t the only one having fun. Writers Mirka Andolfo and Luca Brenzino establish their comedic tone early on, and it’s clear from this issue alone that it’s a great fit for Sita and her adventures.
The character work is great and very well established with no need to read any background material. It’s a great jumping point. Also, Valentina Pinti’s art is a great complement to the script, and everything is beautifully realized (including the rather large enemy, which I always hint at but won’t spoil).
I picked up this issue from Empire Comics in Portsmouth and had no prior knowledge of its existence. And now I’m definitely going to get the rest of the series!
