That title is a bit of an exaggeration, isn’t it? Therefore, this time we will introduce free manga for “Manga Present Day”. Recently, when the distribution side of the comics industry collapsed, Free Comic Book Day and Comics Giveaway Day began to be held on the same day.
But you didn’t come here to read about that, right? I came here to read my thoughts on the double headliner of Masters of the Universe and Dungeons & Dragons! So let’s check them out.
The first is Telling Tales, a Masters of the Universe story that features Prince Adam telling the outlandish tale of He-Man battling Hordak and his evil hordes. The slime-filled shenanigans here are very funny, filled with some gritty Masters of the Universe action (as it should be), and portrayed very well by Andrew Kranke. I love this story and it’s a great flavor of Dark Horse’s Masters of the Universe comics.
This was a little too early to capitalize on the hype for the movie. Despite the film’s really poor performance, a huge number of people who saw it (myself included) seemed to take it for what it was: a wonderfully colorful, campy, Flash Gordon-esque adventure film that did a great job of drawing on the source material.
Anyway, enough about my story about Masters of the Universe. What did you think of the Dungeons & Dragons story?
Magefall is a beautifully drawn story featuring dueling magic users. It looks absolutely gorgeous, but unfortunately the story was completely flat to me. While the Masters of the Universe chapters feel beginner-friendly and full of useful explanations, Magefall falls short and doesn’t feel particularly interesting or approachable for beginners.
I had no interest in the characters or the ending of the story. This is a shame, as I often enjoy Dungeons & Dragons media outside of TTRPG, but this short trip did nothing for me.
Still, you can’t complain for nothing, right? And at least Masters of the Universe was great!
