I took some time to review the first issue of Brett Bean’s new fantasy series, “D’Orc.” That’s because the hype surrounding this comic is absolutely feverish and shows little sign of slowing down, with seemingly endless print and cover variations. It was difficult to approach this work without simply thinking about how overrated it is or what is so exciting about it. That was exactly my reaction when I first read it!
So what is it about and is it worth reading?
Doruk is a story about the title character, a half-dwarf, half-orc orphan who becomes the subject of a grave prophecy in the world of Sandelein. His tradition gives him one foot in the realm of light and one in the realm of darkness, and he likely intends to bring about the end of the world. Accompanied by a talking shield (with bulging eyes and a very murderous nature), Doruk wants nothing to do with the prophecy, but escaping his fate may not be the easiest quest.
First of all, it’s really hard to understand why Doruk caused such an uproar. I think people are probably trying to jump on the next big thing quickly, but right now it feels like a self-perpetuating hype loop.
That said, in this first issue, Brett Bean (writing and illustrating) delivers a fast-paced, surprisingly violent story with some very engaging world-building. Dork himself is a likeable character, torn between trying to do the right thing and keeping his head down, but this issue does a great job of keeping everything moving.
I’ve read more fun and interesting small(ish) press comics this year, and none of them have gotten as much attention as Dork, but I don’t mean to downplay or be negative about Bean’s success here. It’s great to see a creator-owned property get so much attention and garner so much attention. Even if it doesn’t live up to the hype, I don’t think it could have been anything like this.
