In a place where disguised vigilantism is regulated and legal, something strange seems to be infiltrating our world. In the midst of supernatural mayhem, government agent Terrence Vigil begins recruiting others to his team. When investigating the disappearance of a troubled young woman in the first case, the situation turns out to be far more paranormal than it first appears…
Starting with quite a few pages of exposition, Ghostwood #1 takes a while to really tackle its central mystery. When it comes to fruition, it’s incredibly appealing and extremely well-made, but when you return to the current reality, you can’t help but feel like there are too many moving parts trying to grab your attention.
Too many ideas and concepts are thrown at the reader at once, with unique takes on superheroes and villains, numerous supernatural occurrences, and teams assembled to investigate otherworldly problems, with seemingly little time or detail to let each one breathe properly.
As mentioned above, The Disappeared Person’s Story is a comic book in its own right, and the excellent art, complemented nicely by the bold and incredibly vibrant color scheme, is very strong throughout. The design of the supernatural creatures and the dynamism of the action-driven sequences are all great aspects of this comic.
I hope that in future issues, other elements of the story come together in a way that justifies their inclusion. But this first chapter brought the supernatural elements to the fore, and I couldn’t help but wish that the superhero-esque details in the world-building were introduced a little more slowly later on.
