Comics like “Denim Devil” and “Under the Tree When No One is Watching” are full of answers. As I entered middle age, I became really bad at reading horror comics, so I didn’t read them for a long time. But the story of mostly charming and incompetent passers-by and animal serial killers definitely gave me a taste for blood. I recently dove headlong into the perverse It KilledEveryone But Me, and as soon as I finished it I wanted more gore.
I found this in Zanjin’s Apprentice. Like It KilledEveryone But Me is published by Mad Cave Studios, who really seem to be on a winning streak in recent years with both original and licensed comics. So what is it about?
Riley is a podcaster with a traumatic past and an obsession with serial killers. It helps that her town has its own prolific, long-running killer who has been terrorizing the community for decades. A Hopton Valley killer wearing a lion mask murders entire households at will and is seemingly invincible. But Riley has a plan and may have found his idol…
This is a very dark comic, but it has a brutal yet slasher movie feel to it, and you can’t help but be impressed by the inventive, gory, and graphic kills. The way Riley’s obsession is set up is very clever, and her apathy and fandom are definitely the most disturbing parts of the comic.
This first issue basically sets everything up for the series, but it’s very well done, and the writing by Justin Richards helps give us plenty to chew on without feeling like exposition for exposition’s sake.
Val Halverson’s art, with lots of blood, knives, and exploding body parts, matches the script perfectly. Despite the blood and gore, Rebecca Nulty’s coloring is much more subdued than I expected.
This is a very strong first issue and a truly captivating start to the series. This truly feels like a hidden gem and I can’t wait to see how things develop in the next four issues of the series.
