I know I’m not reviewing this manga in a timely manner, but it’s not set in the New Year of 2026, or for that matter, the New Year of 2025. But after picking up a blind bag of books from Empire Comics at Ports Media Con for a great price, I finally decided to check out this Red Sonja New Year’s special!

Red Sonja’s skills are needed to deal with the village giant problem. However, things are not as they seem, and Sonya soon has to use not only her physical abilities, but also her wits.

This was a really good story, requiring no prior knowledge and had a nice one-and-end feel. Knowing that Red Sonja is a rental blade is all you need here. Still, that context is briefly addressed on the first page of the story.

I wasn’t too crazy about the art style and it felt a little clunky at times. The cartoony look isn’t bad, but some of the content just didn’t work for me (for example, some of the wild animals in the story looked particularly awkward to me).

Nevertheless, scenes with no dialogue were used well during establishing shots and action sequences, and were actually quite well done.

Many comic book publishers outside of the big two are doing a great job with licensed comics these days, and in my opinion, Dynamite ranks as one of the best along with my current favorite, Mad Cave Studios (well, aside from Udon Entertainment, which for me is the best publisher).

And the blind bag gimmick seems to work well for suckers like me. Because otherwise I would never have read this. I think Dynamite’s mission was accomplished because it makes me want to read more Red Sonja comics.

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.

Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Please support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will not only help me keep the lights on here, but will also help keep my writing dream alive. However, please understand that there is no pressure. I hope you enjoy reading my article.
