While on a mission to investigate a distress signal from a technologically deficient planet, the crew crashes their ship. As dangerous creatures from the planet’s surface approach, the crew must work together to survive. But with prejudice and mistrust on full display, their quarrels may decide their fate…
The story of CJ Durbin and JR Turvey is based on a TTRPG campaign (specifically the game What’s Old Is New), and it unfolds here in some interesting ways. Continuing the Star Trek similarities, the Deep Space Nine -esque setting gives way to a more Away Team Mission style story.
But I’ve never seen the away team bicker or throw insults (and stones) at each other like this motley group. Nor have you ever seen an away team’s players so catastrophically lacking in confidence as the characters here.
What’s interesting is that almost every major character here has at least one flaw, and the aforementioned racism means they’re not all good people by any means.
I should mention that there’s a clever and very funny visual homage to Mortal Kombat here. All make for interesting and enjoyable reading. Given how the last few pages unfold, it’s anyone’s guess where the story will go, but I’m looking forward to finding out.
