Full disclosure: I have never watched the Speed Racer anime. My only exposure to this series was the live-action adaptation by the Wachowskis, but I thought it looked great, at least visually, and I understood what they were going for with their incredible animated style. But since I’m not the biggest fan of this movie, I had ignored this comic book reboot from Mud Cave.

Still, something drew me in. Even though I wasn’t a huge fan of this movie and had never seen the original animation, something about it still drew me in. So I gave it a chance and I’m so glad I did.

A family tragedy forces Speed (yes, Speed Racer is his name), the middle brother of the Racer family, to participate in underground racing without the knowledge of his mechanic father. The pull of the big leagues is irresistible, but it will take another tragic event to force Speed into competition.

This was a great and very well written ride from start to finish. Perfect pacing, great illustrations, serious tone and the right balance between the initial setting and camp of the characters.

It’s not subtle by any means, but the racing is thrilling, the action is great, and the drama is very well done, although one violent scene is perhaps a little over the top given the light melodramatic nature of the rest of the story.

Still, this is very convincing, and I say this as someone who has no nostalgia for Speed Racer at all. I’m totally on board with this plan and have already read a few issues so I can say I’m in for quite a treat once I check it out for myself.

Also note that if you have a GlobalComix Gold subscription, you can read it for free. So what are you waiting for? Start those engines…

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
