In the aftermath of the attack on the Daily Planet, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White go on a very strange journey. Discovering a somewhat reversed version of their world, they meet a particularly bizarre variant of Superman: Bizarro.

This first issue of Bizarro’s origin story, co-written with Kevin Smith, is, well, certainly taking a while to get everywhere. It’s primarily about a young reporter, Jimmy Olsen, and his boss, Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White, as they argue, argue, and rant, page after page repeating explanations and details that don’t really go anywhere.

This would all be fine if you weren’t so complacent. Kevin Smith certainly likes the sound of his character’s voice.

It’s okay to have faith that the series will conclude or continue. A slower, more measured pace is fine if the series is actually building something. However, Smith’s reputation for completely abandoning comedic stories is well known at this point. Therefore, I’m not confident that Bizarro: Year None will continue, much less conclude. The presence of co-writer Eric Carrasco may be a good sign, but Smith has so much goodwill burning among comics fans that it’s hard to support this until we know what’s been completed and what’s definitely in the works.

It’s a shame that Smith’s involvement taints this issue from the beginning. Because its quirky approach (including some seriously insane and exaggerated art by Nick Pitala) hints at real potential for an unusual and suitably bizarre story.

Still, at least we got a variant cover featuring Weird Al from the Bizarro universe. In fact, to them, he’s a perfectly normal Al Yankovic.

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.

Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Please support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will not only help me keep the lights on here, but will also help keep my writing dreams alive. However, please understand that there is no pressure. I hope you enjoy reading my article.
