The political situation looks dire. Despite many years of preparation, the Conference of Babel collapsed. Things seem completely hopeless, but Starfleet has one last ace. It’s the resurrected Captain James T. Kirk. Will the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or even just one?
I don’t entirely agree with the decision to bring Kirk into this series, but his willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good without giving anything else here ultimately justifies his presence to some extent.
The way it unfolds is also very interesting and sets up the third story arc well.
I know it’s not to everyone’s taste, but I really enjoy the stylized art and slightly off-kilter, simple color scheme used in this series. There are some great panels in this issue. I’m not too keen on relying on full text pages as explanations, even if they appear as in-universe documents. Especially the way it’s used here, it feels like a lazy storytelling device in a visual medium.
Still, this was a fun read regardless, and even if it didn’t quite live up to the power of the first few issues, it covered a largely untouched era of the Star Trek universe and was at least interesting and eventful.
