Though masquerading as a cozy, anthropomorphic animal fable, Under the Tree is something else entirely, with one of its main selling points being the juxtaposition of charming fairy tale art and clearly gory serial killer subject matter.

Sam, an anthropomorphic bear, is hiding a very horrifying secret. Although ostensibly a kind and helpful member of the local community, she regularly succumbs to dark urges to gruesomely murder and butcher innocent animals. Given that the small town of Woodbrook, where she lives, is a peaceful haven for everyone, she deliberately chooses her victims from the city to ensure that they are just one of the many animals that always go missing.

So when the animals of Woodbrook begin to appear in very public places, gruesomely and purposefully displayed, Sam tries to find the “new” killer before her own secret and horrifying activities are discovered.

In this issue, the townspeople of Woodbrook are angry and seek justice, with pig Cherry Perkins leading the charge. But sticking your head over the parapet while a murderer is on the run probably isn’t the wisest move. Can Sam find more clues before more townspeople become the next victims of a new murder spree?

What a tense and thrilling problem this was! Sam isn’t a character to root for, but the central mystery of who’s responsible for Woodbrook’s current murder spree is something we want her to solve, given the shocking depiction of her organized murder operations in the first issue.

The concept of Richard Scarry meeting Dexter is beautifully executed (pun intended), and the writing is as surprising as it is sharp, with a surprisingly shocking climax.

This is very good, and it’s easy to see why Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees was such a big hit. It’s not for the faint of heart, but so far it’s been a wild, shocking and thrilling ride. Let’s see if they can maintain this great momentum as the series continues.

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Remember: This entire article was written by Jason Brown and published on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
