I’ve been slowly working my way through DC’s Absolute series of comics, and I’ve been impressed with each one so far. I started with Absolute Martian Manhunter, which was very strange, very experimental, and very clever, and then moved on to Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman, and Absolute Wonder Woman. While each piece exceeded my expectations, I’ll admit that by the end of the first Absolute Martian Manhunter story arc, the straight-faced mean spirit had worn me out somewhat.
Moving on to Absolute Green Lantern, this first issue is a brilliantly written and often surprising story. Hal Jordan is given something by an alien named Abin Sur, but it seems too difficult to control. As he attempts to leave civilization, he is stopped by the police and does his best to leave him alone, but the consequences of being stopped are disastrous.
Always a reliable duo, Al Ewing is firing on all cylinders in this opening chapter of Absolute Green Lantern. There are plenty of twists in the lore, and it’s not afraid to shake things up quite a bit. Sometimes it feels like otherworldly stories and reboots change elements of the original story to do just that, but Absolute Green Lantern never feels like that.
It draws you in from the first page and leaves you breathless as the issue progresses. We are also left with a very interesting and unexpected cliffhanger. The evidence of this issue alone is enough to add another manga to the list of great absolute titles.
With this line, it looks like DC is going all out to create a whole new universe that’s dark and believable. The world is full of ’90s excess and edge, but uses more modern writing to make the story more readable.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Absolute Green Lantern develop, and it looks like we’ll see a lot more development as the series continues. bring it on!
