Monday, right? Pop culture’s greatest felines return in an all-new series from BOOM. The studio features Garfield in his scariest era. Baby Garfield will be released this spring by the Penguin Random House-owned publisher and will feature four issues by a variety of writers and artists.
Each issue features at least two stories from two different creative teams, with each story focusing on a “world first” in the feline’s life. Baby Garfield #1 features a story focused on Garfield’s first words, courtesy of writers Grace Ellis (Lumberjanes) and Asia Simone (Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur). The second story in the debut issue concerns Garfield’s first furball, the brainchild of Michael Northrop (Dear Justice League) and Rob Justus (Superman: The Good Guy Gang).
Other stories in the miniseries will feature talent such as Ben Clanton (Narwhals and Jelly), Stephanie Cook (The Ruck Pack), Brittany Williams (Mix-Up), Whitney Gardner (Free Piano), Jordan Morris (Youth Group), Olivia Amoah (Here Are the Seas), and Kaye Davault (Misfit Mansion).
The cover of Baby Garfield #1 was drawn by Agnes Garbowska and colored by Syl Bliss. Justus and Simone also offered variations on their series debuts. The series is scheduled to debut at local comic shops on March 18, 2026.
The “baby” version of Garfield is reminiscent of the Garfield seen in flashbacks in the latest film adaptation, released in 2024, a CGI animated film simply called “The Garfield Movie.” In it, they delved into Garfield’s backstory before he was taken in by Jon Arbuckle. It is not yet clear whether other characters first introduced in this film will appear in Baby Garfield’s story in Boom!
Jim Davis’ work began as a syndicated comic in the late 1970s and is no stranger to serial storytelling. Davis sold the rights to Garfield and his supporting cast to Viacom in 2019. Viacom is a company currently owned by Paramount Skydance.
