The Muppets go noir with Dynamite debut

The Muppets is Dynamite Entertainment’s latest Disney production, and the publisher is recruiting for a new series, The Muppets Noir, written and illustrated by Roger Langridge. The comic, which will be released in February to coincide with The Muppet Show’s 50th anniversary later next year, is a detective movie parody in which Kermit acquires a new hard-boiled alter ego after catching a cold and passing out while preparing to record an episode.

The synopsis says: “A show is about to begin at the famous Muppet Theater. In the usual pre-curtain chaos, Kermit the Frog, the troupe’s burly MC, comes apart at the seams. Trying to relieve stress, he settles down to read a few pages of his favorite old detective novel, but gets blown off by an errant brick, leaving him lying backstage while his co-stars try to coax him back to consciousness.”

But unknown to them, Kermit dons the hard-boiled cloak of a fictional hero and walks the dark streets of Dreamland, righting wrongs and solving cases under the cover of night. Chief Researcher Flip Minnow has no time for singing and dancing—unless he’s trying to solve the snoozing detective’s mysterious mysteries! ”

This book is the first Muppets comic book since a short run in Marvel in 2012, shortly after the license was transferred from BOOM!. studio. Mr. Langridge previously created several Muppets comics for BOOM! and Disney Adventures magazines, which were canceled in 2007. Meanwhile, Oni Press has acquired the rights to Sesame Street, and Marvel last month announced a series of Muppets parody variant covers to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Jim Henson creating the Muppets parody covers for the sketch comedy show Sam & Friends.

Incidentally, the Muppets’ spin on the detective genre has been a popular theme for a while, with many fans suggesting a crossover with the Benoît Blanc/Knives Out films (the latest of which, Wake Up Deadman, will be released on Netflix this Friday). Netflix joined in on the fun last week by releasing a crossover with Sesame Street, which is technically considered a Muppets team-up.

Muppets Noir will be released with main cover art by Langridge and variations by Declan Shalvey, as well as a blind bag release that will include a new original cover, variations without text, and more. In the meantime, check out the preview below, along with a preview of Dynamite’s February recruitment PDF.
