Marvel Comics has revealed an upcoming series spun out of Jonathan Hickman and co’s Imperial Guardians, written by Dan Abnett and illustrated by Marcelo Ferreira. Based on a tie-in one-shot by Abnett, Hickman, and Corey Smith, the comic follows the latest installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy, led by Maximus of the Inhumans, as they protect the newly formed Galactic Federation.

Imperial Guardians #1 is a cover by Sean Izaakse

The official synopsis reads: “Gamora, Captain Marvel, Amadeus Cho, Darkhawk, and Cosmic Ghost Rider! Five unlikely agents scouted by the Inhumans Maximus. What is their mission? But they must protect… and failure is not an option. Disposable, denied and disowned, they are the Imperial Guardians. But can they do Maximus’ dirty work and keep their consciences clean? “The Grand Admiral goes berserk and attacks Hala? What’s going on in Darkhawk’s mind? Who thought Cosmic Ghost Rider was a team player? And most importantly…what game is Maximus really playing? ”

Abnett says the book is rooted in the current state of the post-imperialist world, where “the good guys have won.” Or was it? Victories cannot be achieved without compromise in the backroom. Nowhere is this more evident than in the new Guardians’ powers. I chose the roster to reflect that. It’s a mixture of the clashing, mismatched spirit of Star-Lord’s original team and the intense focus of its professionals. The iconic hero of Captain Marvel, the troubled antihero of Darkhawk, the brains and brawn of the wayward Amadeus Cho (yes, that’s the Hulk in Hulkbuster armor!), and the very psychopathic Cosmic Ghost Rider as the mysterious Ramrod and Drill Sergeant. Only Gamora, the deadliest woman in the galaxy, has any chance of keeping them as team leader. ”

Ferreira continued, “‘Imperial Guardians’ is both a team and a space book, so for me it’s a double challenge, but it’s also double the fun. I love space books because they have stories full of great high-octane scenes and I get to show off my artistic talent. Plus, Dan Abnett has put together this cool line-up that gives me space ghosts. It’s given me the opportunity to draw characters like Ryder, Darkhawk, and Gamora! I really hope it conveys everything I enjoy about it!”

The first issue will be released on March 11th (just in time for Women’s History Month) and will feature Sean Isaacse on the main cover and Neso Diaz on the alternate cover. Meanwhile, the post-Imperial/Imperial War series has already begun, with Planet She-Hulk, Nova: Centurion, and Wiccan: Witches’ Road all released, and Black Panther: Intergaoptic #1 scheduled for release on December 17th (no sequel to Imperial War: Exiles has been announced at the time of writing).
