December 3rd’s “Top Comics to Buy This Week” marks the first time this year (so far) that a holiday comic will appear on these lists. That comic is the horror anthology “Dread the Halls,” which is now in its second year and getting even better. Plus, we have a new Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips comic, the end of a killer Star Trek miniseries, and more.

In addition to the usual weekly release list, you can find all of my top 5 picks below… Enjoy!

Top comics to buy on December 3, 2025

batman #4
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Jorge Jimenez
Colorist: Tomeu Mori
Author: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
Gotham City’s organized crime is really, really organized! As Bruce Wayne investigates the Storm Crown, Batman tracks down Anarchy and uncovers a criminal conspiracy hidden in plain sight that will forever change the face of crime and criminals in Gotham City…and the world!
Why it’s cool: This new run of Batman’s flagship title may not be as buzzy as Absolute Batman, which offers a more traditional Bat-take, but I’m just as excited for it the week it launches. This series does one of my favorite Big Two, with thematically independent chapters that add up to a larger whole (see also the very good Superman Unlimited). And each issue is better than the last.
Price: $4.99

Briar: Terror of the Night
Screenplay: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Alex Lynds
Colorist: Marle Silvestre & Louis NCT
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: Boom! Studio
The epic conclusion to Briar Rose’s journey begins here!
Briar Rose and Spider finally share a moment of romantic bliss in High Scrape Village. But the final challenge still awaits. The gang must overcome the dangerous Fall Switch Trap, the final barrier to reaching Glendid’s hideout.
And while the journey is perilous, what awaits is even more perilous… With a final spell that will restore Glendrid to his greatest power, will our heroes be ready for the ultimate showdown?
Why it’s cool: I loved the entire arc of Briar, a great fairy tale deconstruction, and I’m so happy to have this book back for its conclusion. This is just a great example of a familiar fantasy element turned on its head in a surprising and compelling way.
Price: $4.99

Dread the Holes 2025 #1
Screenplay: Jordan Hart & Chris Lyall
Artists: Luana Vecchio, Lee Ferguson, Keithan Jones, Walter Pax, Fabio Velas
Author: Jordan Hart
Publisher: Image Comic – Syzygy Publishing
Dread the Holes strikes again this Christmas season with a gift of 72 pages of all-new tales of holiday horror for just $6.99. This time, Jordan Hart and Luana Vecchio bring us a seasonal blend of Hallmark movies and brutal revenge movies. Chris Lyall and Keithan Jones paint Mars red in “The Martians Conquer Santa Claus!” Walter Pax and Fabio Velas return to the series to bring the festivities. And Lyall and Lee Ferguson conclude with an even darker Christmas carol!
Why it’s cool: This is the third installment of “Dread the Halls” (and the second was Christmas-themed), and this horror anthology series feels really polished. Each story is fun to conceive and execute and brings something different to the table. I’ll give a detailed review in tomorrow’s Wednesday Comics Review section, but be sure to pick it up at the store!
Price: $6.99

Big criminal #1
Screenplay: Ed Brubaker
Artist/Letterer: Sean Phillips
Colorist: Jacob Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
This oversized annual issue is packed with everything CRIMINAL fans love about BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS. This issue is headlined by a novella in which fan-favorite character Ricky Lawless (a major character in the upcoming TV version) takes on his latest heist on his own. What will happen?
Why it’s cool: Simply put, it’s Brubaker and Phillips’ more criminal work. It’s one of the longest-running projects in comics, and it’s getting new energy this year with an animated TV adaptation slated.
Price: $5.99

Star Trek: Red Shirt #5
Screenplay: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Megan Levens
Author: Jody Troutman
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Only two red shirts remain. Mission Squawkbox’s other 10 crew members plummeted hundreds of feet above the ground, were eaten alive by giant alien insects, or were exploded into a million tiny pieces by falling torpedoes. With each death, Ensign Lard and Ensign Miller’s morale has taken a hit…Is Starfleet really the model of cooperation it claims to be? Or are they willing to sacrifice the lives of their members for the sake of peace? With both the Klingons and Romulans in the crosshairs, Lard and Miller’s loyalty is tested. Is it for Starfleet? Or is it ourselves?
Why it’s cool: As a casual Star Trek fan, I really appreciated this series that basically anyone can pick up. All you need is some basic Star Trek knowledge, including the tradition that redshirt characters are always killed off. Then tune in to this amazing miniseries that ends this week with an incredible twist.
Price: $4.99
