Chihiro Yuzuki’s “If I’m with you, love will last forever” is a romance manga by Yen Press that was released in December. The setting of this story feels familiar because the prequel to the series, Flower and Beastman, has already been released in English. With You, Our Love Will Make It Through is animated by Millepensee and you can catch up on the series on Crunchyroll. The rest of With You, Our Love Will Make It Through consists of two main parts: the trio’s first outing and the school sports day. Chihiro Yuzuki uses these two events to further explore both the young beastman Hidaka’s presence in a space mostly inhabited by humans and the implicit tension that develops in the love triangle between Hidaka, Aida, and Mari. Both of these events involve the social and interpersonal aspects of the equation.
Aida is not only a sensible young man who can read the mood, but also a young man who is very in love, as suggested in the previous volume. He closely observes his unrequited love, Mari, and is sensitive to even the smallest changes, so when she is suggested to go out, he puts Mari’s feelings above his own and comes up with excuses to give them both space. At Mari’s suggestion, they go out together, but an unexpected hurdle stands in the way of their simple decision to go out as a group.

It turns out that there are only a few public places that Hidaka, a minor beastman, can go to, such as libraries and hospitals. Unfortunately these are just functional spaces and not places for young people to enjoy, but they make it work.
On the personal side, there are a lot of heart-to-heart conversations as the characters value both the friendship and romantic feelings they have for each other. Despite the latter potentially endangering the former, they choose to openly communicate their feelings rather than remain silent and let them fester into resentment. When two people compete for the same person’s affection and it is obvious who that person loves back, there is no escaping heartbreak and conflicting feelings take root. In With You, Our Love navigates this complexity.
Love triangles are often not really love triangles from the reader’s point of view, so I appreciate that Chihiro Yuzuki has pointed us in this direction with love triangles. When the creator makes one of the love interests an enemy, or doesn’t invest enough time or effort into building the love interest, it becomes clear which character they want you to root for. But in the case of this series, each character cares about each other, either romantically or platonically. Then both characters individually and the feelings they have for each other and their friendship as a trio are all equally important, with Yuzuki making you care about Aida and giving him a chance to make Mari’s heart flutter, even though he knows Mari’s heart is only going in Hidaka’s direction.

In my review of the previous volume, I said that it takes time to understand how the series treats Hidaka as a minority, and how his anger and kindness are closely tied to the image humans have of beastmen. This trend continues in the second volume. Many times, Hidaka has to win the respect of the other students by helping them in some way or by humoring them. Or, if something goes even slightly out of line, it will have an irreversible impact on us, but for humans, we have fallen into the mindset that it is not worth talking about.
This resistance, and in some cases hostile attitude towards Hidaka, puts him in a dangerous position. In Volume 2, we are reminded once again that Hidaka’s parents are a beastman and a human woman. So, I can only imagine how conflicted his parents were in keeping him optimistic despite the challenges they faced, and how he felt when he grew up having negative feelings towards other humans.

Now that Mari and Ida are involved with Hidaka, whispers and gossip from outsiders gradually include how the three of them are always together. They intervene whenever necessary, but so far their approach to Hidaka’s otherness and how they view him has been somewhat superficial. That being said, I respect that Mari, despite her love for Hidaka, is still somewhat conscious of how they are perceived in the world and that her romantic feelings don’t suddenly make her do a 180. We do not yet know what the life and environment of the isolated area and the remaining beastmen inhabitants are like. I look forward to discovering it in the next volume!
As Hidaka and Mari gradually grow closer, their intimacy also evolves. Hidaka’s primitive instinct to lose herself in Mari’s pheromones is gradually replaced by a conscious desire, and Mari’s trust in Hidaka allows her to initiate and negotiate how far to take things, providing her with a safe space to explore her sexuality with Hidaka. Chihiro Yuzuki’s elegant character designs beautifully enhance the intimate scenes, and I’m glad to see that reflected on screen!
