Whether you’re a fan of the original comics or the 1991 movie, there’s no denying the impact the Rocketeer character has had on pop culture. Since the death of creator Dave Stevens in 2008, Rocketeer has lived on for many years in comics written and drawn by other creators. Today, IDW Publishing announced details for The Rocketeer: The Island, a limited series set to launch this February from the creative team of John Layman (Titans, Chew), hit artist Jacob Edgar (Plastic Man No More!, Batman: The Adventures Continue), and visionary colorist KJ Diaz (The Amazing Spider-Man, Blade). Additionally, the series is inspired by a previously unreleased synopsis by Dave Stevens, in which the titular hero returns to save Amelia Earhart, only to end up on a mysterious island full of surprises.

Author John Layman said with great excitement:
“This Rocketeer project has been coming together over the past few months, and I can’t tell you how much joy I get with each new page. A retro world full of charm, humor, and rocket-fueled adventure. It was really great to play in the world of Dave Stevens. Stevens as an artist was an absolute master, and I feel that Rocketeer is one of the greatest classic comic book characters of all time.” Publisher IDW has given me a great opportunity to have fun and get paid, as I have already worked on some comic projects that I love. It also allowed me to honor the vision of my comic book heroes and play in a world I’ve loved for decades. Additionally, the art and colors by Jacob Edgar and KJ Diaz are absolutely stunning and perfect for this book. ”
Artist Jacob Edgar added:
“It’s a great honor to be able to work on Rocketteer, an iconic character that is extremely artistically challenging,” said Edgar. “From Dave Stevens himself to Chris Samney to Darwyn Cooke to Staz Johnson…Cliff Secord always feels like he’s getting the greats. I love the tone John brings to our stories, and I’m always excited to collaborate with KJ Diaz on color. This is a book I never thought I’d be working on, but I’ve had fun making it. I hope that energy comes through on the page.”
THE ROCKETEER:THE ISLAND #1 will be released on February 25th. Fans have until January 19 to pre-order at comic shops to ensure they get their hands on the debut issue. In addition to the cover above, there is also a blank version and a RI 1:50 version by Nick Bradshaw.
