A few months ago, Marvel teased that someone new would be taking up the mantle of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme in a new ongoing series starting in December. Today the publisher officially announced that Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, will be playing the role.

This new ongoing Sorcerer Supreme series is written by Steve Orlando, who has no prior knowledge of the character, and has art by Bernard Chan. The series will feature covers drawn by Reilix as well as a variety of other covers drawn by other talented artists, including Russell Dauterman and others.

The official press release is below.

Following the fall of Victor Von Doom, a new Sorcerer Supreme will rise to replace the ongoing series, SORCERER SUPREME, starting in December. This mystery-filled series has kept fans guessing which magical hero will take up the mantle ever since it was announced. The details were revealed today along with the series’ creative team.

Wanda Maximoff has been a lot of things: a mother, an avenger, and the Scarlet Witch. Now, Wanda claims a new title: Sorcerer Supreme! This December, follow her adventures as the defender of Earth’s chief mysteries in SORCERER SUPREME, written by Scarlet Witch screenwriter Steve Orlando and rising star artist Bernard Chan (Blood Hunters). Fan-favorite artist Leirix delivers a mesmerizing main cover. Superstar “Scarlet Witch” artist Russell Dauterman will also outfit Wanda in costumes befitting the new title and provide variant covers for the first five issues. Each Dauterman cover spotlights a member of Wanda’s advisory board, which includes Claire, Chthon, Wiccan, and other magical experts.

Ignoring tradition and breaking all rules, Scarlet Witch blazes a bold new path as SORCERER SUPREME. But will her rebellious approach to the role take the magic of the Marvel Universe to new heights or ruin it?

The Vishanti have no intention of validating Wanda’s claims and anoint their own Sorcerer Supreme, Agatha Harkness! After a fierce battle with her former master, Wanda wakes up in Limbo, unable to see anything. And if she’s going to escape, she must first defeat its ruler, Madeline Pryor! And what growing mysterious threat is keeping Wanda and Vishanti distracted?Determined to fulfill a sacred new duty, Wanda expands her reach and redefines her powers to protect the world as no Sorcerer Supreme could ever do.

Regarding Wanda’s new direction, Orlando said, “When it comes to Scarlet Witch…anything is possible! Those are the works that Wanda lives by, and the words that we, as creators, live by. So now that the Sorcerer Supreme title is in the wind after One World Under Doom, the question is… So who’s next to wield the cloak and the eye? Or, more accurately, who can hear such a powerful artifact scream from the edge of destruction?” And in the Marvel Universe, there’s only one person who will listen to you above all else when no one else will, and that’s Wanda Maximoff! ”

“I can’t wait for people to see Wanda take on the mantle and the eye, as the primordial destroyer shakes things up for the masters of magic… with everyone’s betterment in mind,” he continued. “And to be able to work with the amazing Bernard Chan and Ruth Redmond? It’s a dream come true, guys. Each page they touch brings style and power to Wanda like never before!”

“I am very excited to join Steve and Ruth and the rest of the SORCERER SUPREME team,” said Chan. “We’re passionate about building a new journey for one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful heroes. Although this will be our first time working on the amazing Wanda Maximoff, we look forward to the challenges ahead and aim to earn the trust and enthusiasm of both her longtime readers and new ones. We hope you’ll join us for the ride.”

Check out the first three main covers by Leirix and variant covers by Rose Besch, Mark Brooks, Devmalya Pramanik, and Jenny Frison. Plus, check out the first three Russell Dauterman variant covers, as well as a variant cover spotlighting the original design sheet for Wanda’s new look. Additionally, Inhyuk Lee captures the current state of Marvel Magic with newly released connected covers for WICCAN: WITCHES’ ROAD #1, DOCTOR STRANGE #1, and SORCERER SUPREME #1, all of which will be released in December. Also unveiled is the Winter Break variant cover for SORCERER SUPREME #1 by Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Jeff Shaw.
