Charles Burns’ critically acclaimed Black Hole is closer than ever to becoming a movie after Netflix won a bidding war for a new TV series based on the comic book. “Black Hole” comes from “I Saw the TV Glow” writer/director Jane Schoenbrunn, who has consistently worked on the series. The film marks Schoenbrunn’s first foray into television, having made two of the most beloved horror films of the last decade.
Published over a 10-year period from 1995 to 2005, Black Hole tells the story of a group of teenagers infected with a sexually transmitted disease that literally turns the patient into a monster.
Black Hole has been in development as a feature film on and off for years, with big-name directors like David Fincher (The Social Network), Alexandre Aja (Crawling) and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) on board. Plan B, which financially supported Famuyiwa’s version of the film, remains attached to Schoenbrunn’s adaptation. According to THR, Schoenbrunn will be credited as a producer, writer, and director of “Black Hole.” In addition to Plan B, Erin Levy is attached as an executive producer. Given that “Black Hole” is a teen-centric period drama (set in the 1970s) with sci-fi elements and wild monster designs, it’s not hard to draw a line between it and Netflix’s flagship series “Stranger Things,” which concludes in January. If Netflix can recapture some of that zeitgeist, it could give Schoenbrunn a real chance to explore Burns’ world.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, Netflix’s official synopsis reads: “An old myth haunts Roosevelt, a seemingly perfect small town. Having sex too young means you’re infected with the ‘bug,’ a virus that literally transforms you from your worst nightmare into a ‘monster.’ Ridiculous, right? That’s what Chris always thought. Until one reckless night at the beginning of her senior year, she finds herself infected.” Now, she is thrown into the forest to live with other infected people, but a terrifying new threat emerges – a serial killer who hunts them down one by one. ”
No cast or release date have been announced for Black Hole, but continued commitment to the series makes it seem more likely that it will actually happen.
