Needless to say, dynamite has a considerable preference for reviving classic and beloved animation brands through comic publications. Therefore, it should come as a surprise that the publisher has released a new Sandals The Barbarian Comics series from author Jason Aaron and artist Cuber Baal. Considering Aaron’s past works, especially the stints on Conan, you couldn’t seek a more perfect creative team.
The original Ruby Spears Animated series was short-lived, but has earned a considerable amount of cult following. Created by Steve Gerber, the series boasts many other comic book legends involved in its production, including Jack Kirby and Alex Toss. The series features covers drawn by well-known artists including Rob Liefeld, Dan Panosian, Francesco Matina, Michael Cho, Joseph Michael Linner, Bjorn Byrnd and more.

Next year’s Dynamite Entertainment, Warner Bros. Discovery, global consumer products and cartoon superstar Jason Aaron, the legendary Sandal cuts down to comic books.
Thundarr The Barbarian ran towards two thrilling seasons in the early 1980s, and exploded the creative minds of the entire generation that saw it. The premise of this novel takes the fantastic staples of wild bars, wizards and monsters, setting them into an apocalyptic vision of our world for nearly two thousand years in the future.
Author Jason Aaron has appeared in comics for a quarter century, making forays in almost every top character and franchise, a wide range of genres and hit independent works. His work has proven decisive in many cases, with countless award nominations and victory. He is not a stranger to swords and sandals, but leads the accusation with the revival of another wild cartoon icon in the past few years. Now he is ready to bring the world of Thundarr into the hands of pages and readers.
Aaron has been joined by artist Cuber Barr in the effort to spurt the tee into his biggest breakout. Vampirella, James Bond, and Jennifer Blood Illustrator are ready to sling ink as they bring Aaron script to the page, along with Thundarr’s signature Sunsword.
“This strange new world was born from an old, savage, super science, and magical world created by so many comic book legends. “The Barbarian Sandar is not my greatest Saturday morning comic book comic of all time. It’s a fundamental element of my DNA as a writer. To be excited about making Thundarr’s first comic book adventure is a career full of dream work. We all know and love, while driving Thundarr into his most epic adventure.”
In this series, Sandar and his trusted fellow Princess Ariel and Okura fight to save the world’s last surviving human beings from enslavement by mutants and wizards. However, Thundarr’s biggest enemies will need to fight to save the future itself, like Gemini, Mindok the Mind Menace, team-ups to devise the ultimate revenge. And for the first time we learn the origins of Sandal when he wields his powerful and mysterious Sandsword, including for the first time his first meeting with Ariel, Okura.
To add to this monumental comic event, editor Joe Rybandt called the top name for the stunning series cover. The first names include Rob Liefeld, Dan Panosian, Francesco Mattina, Michael Cho, Joseph Michael Linsner, Björn Barends, and more.
To my surprise at a time when it was commonplace, sandals never featured in their own comic book stories. This is further distinguished by its deep pedigree connection with the medium. King of Comics’ own Jack Kirby worked on the production design of the show, establishing its memorable look. He was complemented by Hannah Barbera/Ruby Spears icon and “artist’s favourite artist” Alex Toss. The show’s main original creator was Steve Gerber, an enigmatic author known for his satirical and bounded works in comics such as Howard the Duck, Man to Man To, and Omega the Unknown. Other cartoon mainstays like Martin Pasko, Mark Evanier and Roy Thomas also played a key role in Thundarr’s original story. And now these connections go round, courtesy of one of the biggest names in the comics today!
