The legendary A1 deadline anthology returns on Kickstarter

The Fabled British Comics Anthology A1 is back, and has Pal: Deadline, another legendary British publication. The A1 deadline is back with former co-editors Dave Elliott (Atomeka) and Chris Northrop (The Terrifying Future) Kickstarter. The first 80-page special features comics, culture, music and art from the top talented array.

The A1 and deadline were two of the most influential British comic magazines of the 90s. And you can learn more about them in my Little Side Project. It’s a very colorful story and I’ve got more to say about it soon. But there’s a lot of history to cover.

The A1 (created by Dave Elliott and Garry Leach, released in 1986 in 1989) was anthlogy owned by creators, featuring Moebius, Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell, and Bill Sienkiewicz. Deadline (created in 1988 by Brett Ewins and Steve Dillon) mashed into a punk fuel magazine that gave comics, youth culture and indie music to tank girls around the world.

And now they’re together in a new mashup for 2025:

There is no algorithmic storytelling. There is no censorship. There is no compromise. There is no AI.

Alongside the new story, authentic voices from legends bridge the disordered energy of the original, revisiting classic material, while the next wave of creators advances the medium.

“The last few years have been a hellish hole for creators, publishers and retailers, so we decided not to take the traditional publisher/distributor route,” says Dave Elliott, co-creator of A1Deadline. “By working with the scary future, we’re building this kickstarter, we put the artist first and create space for art and telling stories where everything between the covers is in a creator-owned place. This has grown so much beyond what we could imagine since we started talking to creators.”

“This is not a book I’m proud of what I’m working on, it’s fearless, loud and alive,” adds Project Manager and Designer Chris Northrop. “The A1Deadline Special Edition is a place where you can put your mouth, push back and talk to the world we live in, just like the deadlines in the 90s.”

Contributors include

Sheki Kane (Bulletproof ffin) Rufus Daygro (The Last Gang in Town) Allison Sampson (Wynebago Cemetery) Alan Martin (Tank Girl) Mark A. Nelson (Alien/Thunder Hunter) Steve Pugh (Hotwire/Flintstone) Ed Hillier “Illya” (

It includes the following contents:

The all-new comic from the classic banger of today’s boldest voices has been restored and announced in full color for the first time in a 15-storey comic, articles and features exploring the intersection of music and culture.

When it launches later this fall, you can sign up for Kickstarter here. But in the meantime, here’s a preview:

And they even have a trailer:

If the 90s look cool today, the A1 and deadline are part of what made them cool. Let’s see if they can turn the band back together.
